Delhi Fire Tragedy – Why Industrial Fire Accidents are Unabated!!!

Fire broke out at a factory in Delhi’s Peeragarhi in the early hours of January 2, 2020.

Rahul Jadhav, Director – Aarush Fire Systems Pvt. Ltd.

Recently a huge inferno engulfed a factory in Udyog Nagar area of Peeragarhi, Delhi.  Reportedly, seven fire engines were rushed to the spot upon a call. However, till the time the firemen reach the site, fire spread out due to the explosion of the batteries. A portion of building also collapsed due to the blast, following which several workers and fire personnel got trapped inside, when fire-fighters were dousing the blaze

According to the fire officials, many people were trapped inside the building after the explosion and collapse. Later, the fire had been brought under control and the cooling process was underway. All the firemen, who were trapped under the debris, had been rescued. Unfortunately, a fire-fighter was killed and almost 14 others injured in this mishap. The deceased young and brave fire-fighter has been identified as Amit Balyan (20). As many as 18 people, including two caretakers and a security guard, were rescued from the building, officials added.

Figure 1 – According to an eyewitness, several explosions were heard as the conflagration gutted down the building and trail of smoke billowed out from the building as the fire brigade personnel battled to contain the inferno.

This unfortunate incident once again highlighted lapses in the fire safety procedures followed by industries. A slew of fire accidents occurred in less than a month damaging human lives, properties and goods. It is often observed that, in commercial establishments, major fires start in storage area and warehouses than production areas. This is highly critical in case of factories where power batteries are manufactured because such products entail use of extremely inflammable chemicals including highly concentrated acids.

Poorly stored goods – even though they are highly flammable – basically help to spread fire. Such kinds of grave negligence obstruct fire fighters gain access to the fire, reduce the effectiveness of sprinkler systems and eventually help the fire to spread. In such situations it is highly likely that the employees of the firm and even fire-fighters may also get trapped.

India has a fire safety audit to assess the safety of an organisation, but lacks legislative provisions regarding the scope, objective, methodology & frequency of the audit. Fire Safety Audit (FSA) is found to be an effective tool to assess fire safety standards of an organisation or occupancy. In other words, it is aimed to assess the building for compliance with the National Building Code of India, relevant Indian standards and the legislations enacted by state governments and local bodies, on fire prevention, fire protection and life safety measures. In line with its commitment of providing effective fire safety, Arush Fire Systems provides the complete solution in this regard.

Arush Fire System is deeply anguished over news of death of fire operator Amit Balyan and salutes his valour. The entire team of Arush Fire System hereby express sincere condolences to his bereaved family members.
